Healthy Connections Study Circle

Introduction

This notebook contains some of the tools and materials needed to conduct an Adult ESL Practitioner Study Circle. The National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) has developed activities such as the study circle for teachers and professional development staffs in an effort to link research and practice as well as to help teachers develop their own knowledge and skills in a specific area.

We have adapted the NCSALL model and materials for purpose of examining health literacy in adult ESL classrooms, specifically the issue of lead poisoning.

Through a collaborative effort by Center for Immigrant & Refugee Community Literacy Education (CIRCLE) at SF State University, Center for Vulnerable Populations at University of California-San Francisco, and Literacyworks and supported by a grant from The Public Heath Trust this is a professional development series, which we will implement in settings where the issue of lead poisoning is relevant.

As an ever-evolving project we are continuously looking for interested potential participants. These materials and this format can be adjusted
to address other themes around health and health literacy that our learners and their communities face.
