Learn About the Issues

During election season, people hear lots of messages from the candidates and about the propositions. Sometimes it's hard to sort it all out. It helps to start with your own point of view about the issues you care about.

  • Think about what you believe in before you choose who to represent you.

  • Think about what issues are important to you when you decide which propositions to vote on.

  • Use the Easy Voter Guide to help understand what will be on the ballot.

Take a fresh look at the issues. Community members speak out in the 20-page California Voices Report.

California Voices

Most campaigns focus on the issues that are important to people who vote regularly. In 2004, the Easy Voter Guide Project helped launch California Voices – a new statewide effort to increase participation of people who are less likely to vote.

In a statewide videoconference, participants chose four issues to focus on. For each one, you'll find an issue worksheet and other resources:

Here are some other good resources for thinking about the issues:

  • Link to the Public Agenda Foundation's First Choice Guides for nine issues like Jobs, Terrorism, the Environment and more – with online quizzes and study resources.

  • The 18-30 Voter Issues Paper (VIP) has questions on issues important to young adults.

  • Next Ten offers an easy-to-read overview of the California state budget in English and Spanish. The website also offers a step-by-step way to build your own budget for California’s future.
