National Conference
Features Adult Learners

Laubach Literacy and Literacy Volunteers of America held their
first joint conference on May 29 through June 1, 2002 in San Diego. This
is the first time the two organizations held their conference together
since they merged in the past year.
The conference featured many presentations by and for the adult learners
who came from all over the country. Topics included:
- A focus group for the Student Task Force
- Finding Our Voice: Women Literacy Learners with Disabilities Speak
Out
- TV411 (a video series that features adult learners)
- Student Advisory Group for ProLiteracy Worldwide
- If You Build It, They Will Come: Developing and Retaining Student
Involvement
- "Open Mike" Forum for Students
- Living Your Dream Through Positive Attitude
- Student Involvement: What Is It?
- A speech by adult learner, Alexander Weir (He is a native of San Diego
who counsels teens at the local social services department and also
has improved his literacy skills at the local literacy council.)
