States Signing On as VALUE Members
(Posted May, 2001)

Recently VALUE added a new category to its membership list. Now state adult education agencies can join VALUE as "state members." By becoming a VALUE member, a state:

1. gets several benefits:
  • VALUE will work with that state to provide leadership training to the state’s adult learners.
  • If a state wants to hire a VALUE trainer or advisor, we will reduce our usual fee for that state.
  • For every learner from that state who becomes a VALUE member, we will send a portion of that learner’s membership fee back to that state.
  • When planning a national or regional VALUE conference, we will give high priority to locating the conference in that state.
  • We will publicly acknowledge that state’s support on our web site and in our publications.

(We will work with each state to negotiate details of these arrangements.)

2. supports VALUE: To become a VALUE state, a state must pay a membership fee. We are requesting $1000 per state, but that fee is negotiable. These fees will pay for postage, telephone, and other office costs at VALUE headquarters. VALUE is trying to find several different ways to cover our costs, and membership fees are an important part of our fundraising strategy.

We sent a letter to all state adult education directors a few months ago to ask them to sign their states up as VALUE members. So far, three states — Massachusetts, Washington State, and Delaware — have joined. (All three of those states have also been doing a lot to support learner leadership within their own borders.)

We thank those states for supporting VALUE and adult learner leadership. We hope others will follow their example. We look forward to working with you.
