VALUE Members Invade Orlando
(Posted July, 2000)

Two dozen VALUE members from a dozen states travelled to Orlando, Florida early in June to attend Laubach Literacy Action’s biennial national conference.

VALUE representatives conducted well-attended leadership workshops on topics like "advocacy," "public speaking," "how to organize an adult learner group," "the adult literacy system and how learners can get involved," "the why’s and how’s of adult learner leadership," and "the history of VALUE."

VALUE member Walter Long had a prominent role as a leader within the Laubach organization, speaking to the entire conference. Former VALUE board member John Zickefoose received an award for outstanding leader.

VALUE representatives staffed a VALUE table in the exhibition area (provided free of charge by LLA), and we made lots of new contacts with potential members from around the U.S.

VALUE's name was mentioned frequently in conference sessions. VALUE is becoming a household word in the literacy field.

Events like these are a good opportunity for adult learners to get together, share ideas, build our membership, and have fun. VALUE plans to send leadership trainers to other national and state conferences in the coming year.

Thanks to Laubach Literacy Action for inviting VALUE to participate in this well-organized event and for underwriting some travel costs to allow VALUE trainers to attend.
