VALUE Members Elect New Board
(Posted February, 2000)

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

In early January, ballots were mailed to the more than 300 adult learners who are VALUE members. (Our membership also includes another 250 adult education practitioners and other supporters of adult education who are not eligible to vote.)

Eleven candidates were on the ballot for seven vacant positions. These candidates had been nominated by VALUE members last fall.

Members had three weeks to record their votes on the ballots and mail them to VALUE's Nominating Committee.

In a very close election, the following people have now been elected as new members of the board:

-- Gloria Ashford (Berkeley, California)

-- Marty Finsterbusch (Morton, Pennsylvania)

-- Kitty Gilane (Hartford, Wisconsin)

-- Calvin Miles (Brooklyn, NY)

-- Dale Sherman (Valley City, Ohio)

-- Eddie Tomasso (North Providence, Rhode Island)

-- Emma Torrez (Milpitas, California)

These newly-elected members will join four of the original board members who are remaining on the board. These original four members are:

-- Pat Blackwell (Bloomington, Indiana)

-- Ed Castor (Windfall, Indiana)

-- Annette Sessions (Hamden, Connecticut)

-- Archie Willard (Eagle Grove, Iowa)

The following four people were on the ballot but were not elected. We hope that they will continue to be active by serving on one or more of the VALUE committees. We also urge them and other VALUE members to consider running in the next elections, which will be held in one year.

-- Vivian De Ford (Eau Claire, Wisconsin)

-- Harold Lockwood (Belmont, NY)

-- Samuel Santiago (New York, NY)

-- Jennie Winnix (Greensboro, North Carolina)

NEXT STEPS FOR THE NEW BOARD

The new board will be meeting for the first time soon via a telephone conference call. We also hope to be able to bring all board members together for a face-to-face meeting (a "retreat") in the next few months.

This will allow all board members to understand how they can best help VALUE. They will also prepare a plan to guide VALUE in the coming year.

(We are seeking donors to sponsor this year's retreat. Last year, in February 1999, the National Institute for Literacy sponsored a similar retreat in Washington, D.C. In that meeting, the board wrote a new mission statement and goals and prepared a plan for 1999.)

"THANKS" TO THE CANDIDATES AND VOTERS!!!!

We thank all of the candidates for volunteering for the board. (It takes courage to put your name on a ballot!!!!)

And we thank all VALUE members who took the time to vote!!!!

The VALUE Nominating Committee

  • David Rosen, Chair (Boston, Massachusetts)
  • Janet Isserlis (Providence, Rhode Island)
  • Meg Young (Portland, Oregon)
