VALUE Seeks Strong Candidates for Our Board
(Posted October, 1999)

In October and November, 1999, VALUE's Nominating Committee is seeking candidates to be on the ballot for our January 2000 board elections. All adult learners who are members of VALUE have been mailed a nominations form, which they should return by November 19th.

Once we receive the names of possible candidates, our Nominating Committee will contact nominees in late 1999 (before the elections) to be sure that candidates can meet these requirements:

VALUE Board members must:

1. Have an up-to-date membership in VALUE. (If a candidate is not already a VALUE learner member, he or she must send in an application and membership fee before December 15, 1999 to be listed on the ballot.)

2. Participate in regular (toll-free) telephone conference calls (an average of once per month for board conference calls as well as occasional other calls for committee work).

3. Co-chair a committee and make sure that committee conference calls are organized and tasks are carried out in a timely way. Committees include:

Membership Committee - Recruits members for VALUE.

Program/Conference Committee - Organizes VALUE adult learner leadership workshops and conferences.

Nominating Committee - Organizes annual elections for vacant Board positions.

Communications Committee - Manages the VALUE web site and "valuelearners" e-list.

Fundraising Committee - Raises funds for VALUE.

Budget and Finance Committee - Oversees how VALUE spends its budget.

By-Laws Committee - Updates VALUE's by-laws when necessary.

4. Have the following:

a. Commitment to VALUE's mission and goals and commitment to performing the tasks required of a board member.

b. Time to give to the required duties (Board members need to give an average of 1-2 hours per week to VALUE activities. They can serve in either 1-, 2-, or 3-year terms.)

c. Access to e-mail to receive and respond to messages. (Use a mentor if needed.)

d. Willingness to be a "pro-active" self-starter, to resolve questions and get tasks done, rather than wait to be told what to do.

e. Willingness to work as part of a team.

f. Experience as a learner leader.

g. A mentor willing to help with board tasks. (If candidates have difficulties with reading, writing, or speaking English or if they have not served on a board before, they might want a mentor from their community or program to advise them.)

We hope to get a well-qualified mix of candidates from different parts of the country, and all races, ages, and genders.

VALUE learner members are being asked to contact other members who might be good candidates to ask if they would like to be on the ballot.

Learner members can nominate themselves, too.
