State Literacy Resource Center are pleased to announce their

Second Annual Literacy Awards
for California Literacy Programs
and
Adult Learners

in

Two Award Categories:

Exemplary Literacy Program Awards

and

Adult Learner/New Reader Awards

In 1995, the State Collaborative Literacy Council through its State Literacy Resource Center Program decided to address a need in California to honor and recognize exemplary literacy programs and outstanding adult learners in the state across all types of providers. It was hoped that such a recognition effort would provide positive support for our learners and our programs and establish a standard against which all programs and learners could assess their own success.

The Council and Center jointly created a recognition program with the intention of continuing the effort annually. Nominations were solicited for these awards from throughout California and in the first year nearly 250 total nominations were received. The awards were then presented as part of the California Adult Learner Conference on March 9, 1996.

This year the program will continue with another set of awards. This call for nominations is being put forth to encourage all literacy educators in the state to nominate your outstanding adult learners as well as to nominate your own program if you believe it is exemplary.

Any adult or family literacy program in California is eligible. Any adult learner who is a participant in one of these programs is also eligible.

Awards will be presented as part of the eight Regional Adult Learner Conferences to be held throughout the state in the Spring of 1997.

Please take a moment to nominate your learner or your program for these awards. A book will be published next fall which will recognize the winners and will tell the stories of all the learners who received an award. The 1996 book is available at your local SLRC Regional Resource Center and will be available on the WWW soon.
