Crime in the Community

  • Youth are dropping out of school

  • There are few work opportunities for youth

  • Many youth feel alienated from the majority culture

  • It's easy to make money selling drugs

  • The sentences are too light for youth offenders

  • There are not enough community programs for youth

  • Gangs provide employment and social structure for youth

  • Once a person is in the criminal system it is difficult to get out

  • There is not enough positive rehabilitation

  • Drug treatment programs are not long enough and difficult to access

  • Many youth lack housing when they get out of jail and re-enter street life very quickly
