[ACKNOWLEDGMENTS -
from original printed edition]
EXPRESSIONS is the product of a tremendously
well-coordinated effort by the learners of Project Read -
Menlo Park, their tutors, and the children who
volunteered to draw pictures to illustrate this book.
Many different people and community organizations have
collaborated to make this work possible. We applaud their
efforts and success.
On behalf of Project Read, I wish to express special
thanks to the San Mateo County Literacy Network for
awarding Project Read a grant in support of its
Year of the Reader activities. Sunset
Publishing Company of Menlo Park responded positively to
our financial need, once again demonstrating their strong
commitment to literacy in our community.
Printing and publishing was provided through the
efforts of Rudy Torrez and O.I.C.W., whose professional
print shop has a program that specializes in training
adults for a confident entry into the job market.
The talented graphic artist, Wendy Chon, designed and
created a strikingly beautiful cover for
EXPRESSIONS. Her choice of photographs combines
perfectly with her design to depict people sharing and
enjoying themselves, as they read together.
Thanks also must go to Karen Fredrickson, Director of
Library Services, the Friends of the Menlo Park Public
Library, and the California State Library for years of
continued support. Project Read staff members Nancy
Guillou, Alice Bradshaw, and Diane Spengel once again, as
so often in the past, demonstrated their firm commitment
to literacy in the production of EXPRESSIONS.
Illustrations for EXPRESSIONS were provided
through the efforts of Matthew Ortega of the Menlo Park
Recreation Department and Wendy Archer-Pacheco of the
Belle Haven Child Development Center, who organized a
children's drawing contest. Some of the illustrations
came from members of our Families for Literacy program
and from other children associated with Project Read -
Menlo Park.
Thanks to Dr. Kevin Starr, California State Librarian,
for his dedication to the California Literacy Campaign
and his commitment to assuring that library services are
available for all Californians. We greatly appreciate the
dedication of Dr. Carole Talan, Family Literacy
Specialist for the California State Library. Her devotion
to family literacy is an inspiration to all of us in the
field of literacy.
Our dedicated tutors and determined learners work
tirelessly week in and week out to show gains in reading
skills. EXPRESSIONS is a tangible result of their
continued progress as new readers. We applaud and wish to
thank each of them! We enthusiastically encourage others
to help improve literacy in every community.
