Barry Bakin is currently an
ESL teacher at Pacoima Skills Center in Pacoima, California. Pacoima Skills Center is part of the Division of Adult and Career Education
of the Los
Angeles Unified School
District. He teaches ESL Beginning High in a “hybrid
technology” classroom. He describes a
“hybrid technology” classroom as one in which all types of technology for
English language learning are available for use by the students and teacher in
an integrated fashion within the curriculum.
In particular, the classroom is equipped with 17 desktop computers
continuously available for student use so that students can move back and forth
from their desks to the computers as necessary, and an additional complement of
25 laptop computers that can be placed on the table tops when the particular
lesson calls for all of the students to use computers simultaneously. Barry is also an ESL Teacher Adviser for the
ESL/CBET and Citizenship Programs Office in the Division. In that capacity, he
develops and delivers technology training, curriculum and other support
services to ESL, CBET and Citizenship teachers throughout the Division. For questions or feedback about these pages,
he can be reached at bbakin@lausd.k12.ca.us.
