The American School System

Day care centers aren't schools, but they are very important. They take children from 1 month to 5 years old. Children 2 to 5 years old can go to nursery school.

Children may go to preschool when they are 3 to 4 years old. Children go to kindergarten when they are 5 years old. When they are about 6 years old, they go to elementary school, or grade school.

After 5 or 6 years in grade school, children go to middle school, or junior high school.

High school is next. High school lasts for 4 years. Most students are about 18 years old when they finish high school.
