DISCOVERING YOUR LEARNERS STRENGTHS, INTELLIGENCES & GOALS
CORE CONCEPTS
Learning is fun.
An equal partnership is critical to an effective learning environment.
We are all readers
Focus on strengths to improve weak areas.
Tutoring is an exciting process of ongoing discovery. The purpose of this section of cards is to promote a series of conversations between tutor and learner which encourages the learner to take an active and equal role in the learning process. Learners often know what works well for them and what doesn't. These cards are designed to encourage a variety of discussions which will help identify the learner's skills, strengths, learning intelligences, and goals. With this information written down for easy reference, both tutor and learner can work together to decide on the teaching strategies that may work best. At the same time, you can record goals and progress. We encourage both to keep copies of these cards.
This section is organized into two sets of cards. The first set is designed to be completed in a sequence. The focus of these cards is on identifying strengths and intelligences. The second set of cards is designed to assist in identifying and recording learner goals for both reading and writing skills. (Note: these are not included in the on-line set) It is important that goals are specific and measurable to be able to show success and progress
Examples of several goals are:1. Read personal mail and bills.
2. Fill out forms accurately at work.
3. Pass the written contractor's license exam.
