The Process

Now you will  get a peek at  the Afghan people and begin learning some of the vocabulary and language connected with their culture.  Remember this will be like a very small taste of the culture.  No two people are exactly alike even though they are from the same country.  Be sure to read each set of directions before beginning each task.

  Let's begin!

     1. First you'll need to open up the Sleuth Finder's Log to record information during this WebQuest.  Downsize the log so you can open the log to record your answers as you find them in this WebQuest.   When you are finished print out a copy of your log.

     2. Next, go to Afghanistan to begin answering  questions #1-4 on your Sleuth Finder's Log. You may need to click on the word "map" to get more information.  You can read more about Afghanistan by going to Scholastic.

     3. Here are a few other key vocabulary words you will need to understand. You may have heard some of them on the news.  Follow the links to discover their meanings. You can find the answers to questions #5-9 here.

burqa 1   2 ,      chador,      shalwar kameez 1  2  3  4,      Taliban,      nan

     4. Take a few minutes to listen to a local radio station in Afghanistan.    You will need to have

RealPlayer software installed on your computer.  If you are unsure, ask your teacher if this is installed.

Record your thoughts while listening in a sentence or two for #10.

     5.  You were just listening to radio in the Dari language, one of the two main languages in Afghanistan.  Now you will have a chance to view both the Dari and Pashtu alphabet.  You will be making a presentation to the class on how to write at least 3 letters in either alphabet.  You may also learn how to pronounce the letters.  Take time to explore each Web site.  On a sheet of paper label the language you are writing and record your letters.

     6.  This activity will take about 30 minutes to complete. First you will read a short biography on Deborah Ellis. Then, listen to the author talk about her book, The Breadwinner.  You will need to have RealPlayer or MediaPlayer installed on your computer.  Ask your teacher if one of these is on your computer before you begin this activity.  When you get to the interview, click the right arrow at the bottom of the page 4 times and find the name Deborah Ellis.  Then choose the best setting for your computer. (28K, 56K, 250K) Again ask your teacher.  Be sure to read the question #11 on your Sleuth Finder's Log before beginning this activity.

  7.  Now you will get to use your artistic talents by coloring in some paper doll models to look like someone you might meet in Afghanistan based on what you have learned about clothing in this WebQuest.  Choose either a BOY or GIRL.  When you open up the site go to FILE/ Print.  Then print a second paper doll that you will color to look like you.  After you print a copy of the doll, add clothing from what you learned in #3.  Color the second doll to look like you.  When you are finished list at least 4 facts you have learned about Afghanistan during this WebQuest on the back of the Afghan doll.

     8.  Last, you will complete a compare/contrast chart about similarities and differences between you and Afghans.  Fill in the chart with at least 3 facts in each column.  Then print out a copy to be used as you read the book, The Breadwinner.

Congratulations!

 You have completed this WebQuest
