I. The U.S. air transit system has many problems.
A. Airplanes are crowded.

B. The bigger airports are too busy.

C. There are huge traffic jams.

D. No new technology is ready to solve the problems.

II. Daniel Goldin, NASA head, is calling for a revolution.

A. Under 500 miles, the travel time averages 80 miles per hour.

B. This is from the doorstep to destination.

C. Goldin says that airplanes should be faster and cheaper.

D. Also, flights need to be safer.

III. NASA is working on the problem.

A. A possible solution is the F-15.

B. It has built-in intelligence that corrects errors.

C. One new airplane can travel eight times the speed of sound.

D. The wings can change shape.

E. There will be jet engines without moving parts.

F. Instruments will let pilots fly a highway in the sky.

IV. Dallas-Ft. Worth airport has important changes.

A. Pilots don't need as much room to land.

B. Air traffic is increased due to final approach spacing.

C. It is like adding another runway to the airport.

V. NASA is designing new airplanes.

A. Some new planes won't need runways.

B. The planes won't be as loud.

C. There will be fewer emissions.

D. Some of the designs will fail but others will succeed.

E. Planes will fly faster, safer, and quieter in the 21st century.

VI. Boeing has a new airplane.

A. It is a tail-less cargo plane that lands at 45 miles per hour.

B. It needs far less room to land than regular cargo planes.

C. Removing the tail of the plane cuts down on drag.

D. Also, it lowers the cost of the airplane.
