Donating Houses to the Community Instead of Demolition

I. Rich owners want to build bigger and better houses.

A. They want to build on expensive Los Altos lots.
B. Before building, they must remove the existing houses.
C. The houses can be bulldozed or moved.
D. Owners have decided to give the houses to East Palo Alto.

II. Roger Gaw owns a home in Los Altos.

A. He wants to donate a house.
B. It will cost a lot of money to move the house.
C. Gaw will get a tax break.
D. A needy family will get a nearly free house.

III. Christina Luiz sells real estate in Silicon Valley.

A. She is willing to donate two homes.
B. Luiz knows builders willing to give away houses.
C. Other people are calling to give houses.
D. People want to donate houses for tax reasons.

IV. Sharifa Wilson is the Mayor of East Palo Alto.

A. East Palo Alto is a poor city with drug problems.
B. Drive-by shootings earned it the nickname, "murder capital."
C. East Palo Alto doesn’t own any property.
D. Eight houses were recently donated to the city.
E. Now they are wondering what to do with the houses.
F. Soon many people will be asking for the houses.
G. For East Palo Alto, it’s an "embarrassment of riches."
