Marine Scientists Get The Picture

I. A Weddell seal hunts for food.

A. A camera is mounted on its head.
B. It takes pictures of the kill.

II. The camera helps scientists to learn about sea mammals.

A. They learn how they dive deep in the ocean.
B. They learn how the hunt for food.
C. They learn how they keep away from animals hunting them.
D. These mammals have to breathe.

III. Terrie Williams is one of the researchers.

A. She works at University of California Santa Cruz.
B. She explains how these mammals dive.

1. The lungs press together.
2. This means they do not float as well.
3. Because the animals are heavy they fall like rocks.

C. Research appears in the April 7th issue of the journal, Science.

IV. Terrie Williams studied a blue whale’s dive.

A. The whale did not seem to move in the video.
B. They made the video run faster.
C. It was easier to see the whale different movements.

1. The whale was swimming.
2. The whate was gliding.

V. Uses of video cameras

A. They used a backward looking camera.

1. It was on a bottle nosed dolphin.
2. It recorded the strong kick at the beginning of a dive.

B. Problems

1. It is hard to get the instruments to stick on a dolphin.
2. The dolphin skin falls off.

C. Solution

1. A special dorsal pack was developed.
2. Special suction cups were made to attach it.

a. Small suction cups for dolphins
b. Really large suction cups for whales

D. Pictures are helping scientists to understand life under the sea.
