California Library Volunteers (CLV) began as an electronic discussion group established to facilitate communication between and among California library volunteer programs. Over 80 folks currently participate in the group representing library staff, volunteers and board members who work with library volunteers and/or are looking to start or expand a volunteer program in their library.

The project moderator is Carla Lehn, a consultant to the California State Library in the area of volunteerism, and author of the 1999 Best Practices Manual on the subject "Volunteer Involvement in California Libraries." The idea is to help people who work with library volunteer programs keep from feeling isolated by helping them to share ideas, materials and problems -- the electronic way!

This website has been established to take our networking one step farther. On it you will find:

  • resources developed by our colleagues for sharing, which can be downloaded and revised for your situation, including sample volunteer job descriptions, policy manuals, forms and training materials, among others.

  • a directory of people participating so you can get in touch with colleagues throughout the state

  • links to other volunteerism and Library-related sites

Remember, our resources section is only as complete as our members are willing to make it! PLEASE send your materials to share to Carla Lehn, preferably in a Microsoft Word document sent as an attachment.

Questions, suggestions or comments about the website, or a request to join the CLV electronic discussion group may also be sent to Carla.

If you would like a free copy of the California State Library's 1999 publication "Volunteer Involvement in California Libraries: Best Practices," by Carla Lehn, send a request to Carla at the State Library.
