Kit Holz, Project Manager

Aloha! I began at CALC in the Fall of 1991 as a volunteer tutor. After a stint as the Assistant Coordinator, and then the Coordinator, I became the Project Manager in 1995. I have watched CALC grow from its infancy. With the help of many, many talented volunteers, I have seen it grow to become an amazing adult literacy project -- the best in the state! (Well, what do you expect me to say?) It's been a fantastic experience, learning and growing along with it.
I chose the photo above because it says "da boss". Everyone teases me that I like to tell people what to do. Obviously, I was busy telling someone what to do when that photo was snapped :)
Although I have lived in Hawaii since 1981, I am originally from Idaho (and really miss the mountains!) I moved here with my husband and two small children, who have since grown up. Ooh, makes me feel so old, but I try not to think about it...
My daughter, before going off to the local university, was a busy volunteer for CALC, working on setting up conferences, tutoring, and compiling a bibliography (which the computer ate 3 times!) Although she has yet to finish at UHHilo, she does have two jobs, neither of which are volunteering for CALC :( I really miss her help.
My son towers over me! I remember when he was such a cute little guy, little being the operative word. He's now over 6'. I remember him having difficulty learning to read, but persistance paid off; he's now an avid reader. He's currently working with his dad building custom furniture using local (exotic sounds better) hardwoods.
And then there's my husband -- my bestest best friend. He not only puts up with the long hours and extra-curricular activities that I engage in for CALC's benefit, he's often right there helping out.
JoAnn Suttle, Learner Services Coordinator

As the Learner Services Coordinator, JoAnn doesn't use her degree in Agriculture very often. Unless you count how many friends she grows...
JoAnn started in January 1999, and has worked very hard ever since. While she's not officially our computer tech, she spends a lot of her time making sure our high-tech boxes keep on ticking. Additionally, she facilitates Learner intake, doing orientations, arranging schedules, ensuring assessments, and generally helping the students to feel at home. And then of course, she tutors. Although she works with all the different students, she's especially good with those who need help improving their math skills.
JoAnn has a heart of gold and would willingly sharing anything with anybody...except maybe her very last bowl of ice cream. In that particular case, the other person would have to be really hungry :)
Volunteer Services Coordinator
We should have our new VSC trainee by mid-July...info will be posted as we get it.
