The COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING CENTER at the Hilo Public Library (CALC) was started in 1991 as the state's first library-based, computer-assisted, adult literacy resource site. Since then, we have grown from a "site and materials only" community resource to a comprehensive adult literacy project.
Located in the Adult Reference Room at the Hilo Public Library, CALC's learning resources include one-to-one, small group, and computer-assisted tutoring in reading, writing, math, English as a second language, and basic computer use. Additional resources include a spacious and well-lit area with tables, chairs, computers, more than 20 educational software programs, audio/visual equipment and tapes, and an adult literacy collection of fiction and non fiction books, learner workbooks, and reference materials.
As a project of the nonprofit Hawaii State Library Foundation, CALC's adult literacy services are made possible through grants, donations, fundraisers, and the help of Support Service volunteers and volunteer Tutors. CALC provides free Volunteer / Tutor Training on-site, or in partnership with the Hilo Community School for Adults.
