Awards
The Alaska Adult Education Association recognizes outstanding leaders in the field of adult education through the Awards Program. Nominations are solicited in the early fall, and winners are announced at the annual AAEA Conference.

The prestigious JOHN L. HULBERT AWARD is presented for outstanding long-term contributions to lifelong learning. Recipients of this award, which is not an annual award, must have contributed to the adult education field for at least ten years. The award was first given to John L. Hulbert in 1983, Connie Munro in 1985, M. Sue Henry in 1987, Jackie Johnson in 1992, Linda Hulbert in 1993, Gretchen Bersch in 1994, JoAnn Henderson in 1996, David Alexander in 1997 and Diane Owens in 1998.

The EDUCATOR'S AWARD is given to a teacher, instructor, counselor, volunteer, aide or other adult education staff person who has made special contributions in a local program. Previous winners of the EDUCATOR'S AWARD have been Sister Jeanette LaRosa and Connie Munro (1979), Mary Alexander and David Alexander (1980), Carol Hagel (1981), Fran Kelso (1982), Toni Kroft (1983), Chris Jamin (1984), Diane Owens (1985), Ruth Iten (1986), Donna Williams (1988), Albert Reetz (1989), Paul Romie (1990), Carole Bartholomew (1991), Nancy Osborn (1992), Janet Jones (1993), Susan Bury (1994), Glenda Schmierbach (1995), Marilyn Koezuna-Irelan (1996) and Wick Wright (1998).

The PRESIDENT'S AWARD is given to a key decision maker (such as an advisory board member, legislator, government official, or corporate official) who, in some exemplary way, supported and/or forwarded the cause of adult education. The PRESIDENT'S AWARD has been given to Charlie Johnson and Clark Jones (1979), Emma Widmark (1980), Frances Jones (1981), Mary Chamberlain (1982), Donald Honea (1983), Representative Jim Duncan (1985), Senator Don Bennett (1987), Jane Evanson (1988), Jim Irany (1989), Representative Johnny Ellis (1990), Marianne McNabb (1992), Billie Joe Caldwell (1993) and Fran Ulmer (1994).

The PROGRAM AWARD is for innovative or exemplary efforts in the area of curriculum instruction, community organization, community service, and/or creative programs. In the past, PROGRAM AWARDS have been received by Adult Learning Programs of Alaska (1979), Kawerak, Inc. (1980), Nulato Rural Program (1981), Southeast Regional Resource Center (1982), Learning for Independence (1983), Sitka Adult Education Program (1984), Nine Star Enterprises (1987), Alaska Vocational Technical Center (1988), Anchorage Learning Center (1989), Anchorage Literacy Project (1990), the Office of Adult and Vocational Education (1991), the Rural Utility Business Advisor Program (1993), the Bethel Regional Adult Education Program (1994), Sitka Adult Education Program (1995), Kenai Peninsula College's-The Learning Center (1997) and the Rotary Club of Fairbanks (1998).

ADMINISTRATOR'S AWARD is given to a person who is involved in the administration of an adult education program, and who has had a significant impact on the development of that program. This award has been given to Susan Rinker (1992), Kathleen Sawyer (1993), Diane Taylor (1994), Kathy Hanson (1995), David Alexander (1996) and Donna Chaikoff (1998).

The VOLUNTEER AWARD is given to a volunteer who makes a significant commitment or contribution to adult education, overcomes unusual challenges during the volunteer's service, and makes a significant impact upon the community, program, or students' needs. The VOLUNTEER AWARD was presented to JoAnn Healy (1985), Alice Aui (1987), Helen Messick and Bertha Bucher (1988), Mary Flenaugh (1989), Pam Ferris (1990), Holly Kristiansen (1991), Marilyn Remele and Barbara Heinrichs (1992), Elinore Ebling (1993), Lillian Richardson and Avalon Sullivan (1994), Jim Brader (1995), and Frank Ockert (1996), Dr. Milburn (Nels) Nelson (1997) and Michael Holcombe (1998).

The RISING STAR AWARD is presented to a person just starting to be involved in Adult Education, who demonstrates tremendous potential for greatness. The recipient of this award must have been involved in Adult Education for at least one year but not more than two years. The RISING STAR AWARD has been given to Marie Lutz (1995), Wick Wright (1996), John Ruhlin (1997) and Linda O'Brien (1998).
